We checked whether two listings were actually two bags
Often they are not. Amazon publishes one rating count across all the variations of a product, so when four search results carry an identical count they are one product in four colours rather than four competing bags. Thirty-eight of the 79 bag listings in this read sit inside fifteen such shared pools. The clearest is the Safari Genius Alley 55cm cabin case: four listings, all with 9,094 ratings and a Rs. 6,999 MRP, selling at Rs. 1,399, Rs. 1,499, Rs. 1,499 and Rs. 1,599.
We compared the price inside each pool before anything else
That is where the money is. Inside these pools the gaps are Rs. 200 on the Genius Alley, Rs. 200 on the Aristocrat Airpro, Rs. 100 on the Safari Thorium Neo and Rs. 50 on the Pentagon Pro, and in one case a single rupee: two American Tourister Skiddle listings at Rs. 2,847 and Rs. 2,848. None of these gaps is visible unless you scroll far enough to see the same bag twice, which is exactly what a search result is not designed to make you do.
We read the badge as a list-price fact and printed the multiple
The median badge across the 79 bags is 69 per cent — far deeper than most shelves we read — and the multiples show why that number is not a saving. The steepest is a Rs. 398 duffle under a Rs. 2,999 MRP, 7.54x; a Kamiliant cabin case sells at Rs. 1,399 under Rs. 8,500, 6.08x. At the other end a Gear duffle carries a 2 per cent badge — and it is the same duffle that sells elsewhere in the same search at 56 per cent off.
We counted the evidence, and here there is plenty of it
Unusually, this shelf is well evidenced: 78 of the 79 bags publish a rating and the median count is 1,812, with a Rs. 398 strolley duffle carrying 33,707 and a Safari cabin case 22,655. That is the opposite of most shelves — the Tata CLiQ accessory read we published the same day had a median of three. The catch is that a big count usually belongs to a whole product family, so it tells you about the model, not about the colour you are buying.

Nothing here was packed, wheeled through an airport, dropped or weighed. What we can compare is what Amazon displays: price, MRP, badge, star average and rating count, read on one day.

Not necessarily. Amazon pools one rating count across a product's variations, so a large count often covers several colours and sometimes several sizes.
