Two smartphones from a Flipkart listing read the same morning, in their own listing photographs on a colour-block banner — the category Flipkart's exchange programme is built around

Flipkart's exchange programme contains a clause most people tick past: "once a device is sent by me to Flipkart, in no scenario can this device be returned back to me".

We read the exchange, buyback and Replacement Guarantee sections of Flipkart's own terms on 30 October 2026. The handover is simultaneous, the indemnity you give follows the device to its next owner, and a failed data wipe is explicitly your problem.

Flipkart's exchange programme has a clause most people never read. In its own words, on its own terms page: "I understand once a device is sent by me to Flipkart, in no scenario can this device be returned back to me."

What you are agreeing to when you tick the exchange box

The clause, as publishedWhat it means in practice
"I understand once a device is sent by me to Flipkart, in no scenario can this device be returned back to me."The exchange is final the moment the device leaves your hands
"I understand that the new device delivery and the old device pickup will happen simultaneously (hand in hand) and I shall keep the old device ready to be given for exchange."You hand over the old device at the door, at the same moment the new one arrives
"I confirm that I am the sole and absolute owner and/or user of the product… genuine and… not counterfeit, free from any and all encumbrances, liens, attachments, disputes, legal flaws…"You are warranting clear ownership and authenticity of the device you hand over
"You agree to indemnity and keep indemnifying Flipkart.com and any future buyer of the device against all or any third party claims, demand, cost, expenses including attorney fees…"The indemnity follows the device to whoever Flipkart sells it on to
"I confirm that all the data in the said device will be erased… if any data still accessible due any technical reason, Flipkart.com, Seller or the manufacturer shall not be responsible…"Wiping the phone is your job, and the risk of a failed wipe is yours
"my personal information… might be processed, transferred and retained by the retailer and other entities involved in managing the program"Your details are shared with the parties administering the buyback
"Products distributed as gifts from state sponsored or NGO funded distribution programmes are not accepted for exchange under exchange offers."A device received through a government or NGO scheme is excluded

The one-way clause is the one to notice. There is no cooling-off period for the device you hand over: once it is gone, the terms say it does not come back, in any scenario. And because the pickup and the delivery happen "hand in hand", the decision is made at the doorstep rather than after you have set the new phone up.

The indemnity is wider than it first looks. You are not only indemnifying Flipkart — you are indemnifying any future buyer of the device against third-party claims arising from your use of it up to that date, including their attorney fees. This is the published wording, reproduced for reporting; nothing here alleges wrongdoing by Flipkart, and this page is not legal advice.

The eight things Flipkart says it will not take back

Excluded from return or replacement
Damage due to misuse of the product
Incidental damage due to malfunctioning of the product
Any consumable item which has been used or installed
Products with tampered or missing serial / UPC numbers
Any damage or defect not covered under the manufacturer's warranty
Any product returned without all original packaging and accessories — the box, the manufacturer's packaging and everything originally included
Jewellery which is "made to order" on the customer's request
Returns not applicable at all for made-to-order jewellery, innerwear, lingerie, socks and clothing freebies

The packaging clause catches more people than the rest put together. A product returned without all original packaging and accessories — the box, the manufacturer's packaging, and everything originally included — is listed as ineligible. So is any consumable that has been used or installed, which covers a large part of what gets bought on a sale weekend.

The exclusions for innerwear, lingerie, socks, clothing freebies and made-to-order jewellery are absolute in the terms: not a shorter window, but "returns are not applicable". Flipkart also states that it may suspend, block or disqualify a user it suspects of false claims, and that customers blocked for suspicious or fraudulent activity "will not be allowed to return their products".

Clothing, footwear and the Replacement Guarantee window

What you boughtWhat appliesThe conditions, as published
Clothing and footwear30-day exchange with qualified sellersNot used other than for trial; not altered, washed, soiled or damaged; original tags and packaging intact; branded boxes undamaged
Damaged, defective or "not as described" lifestyle items30 Day Replacement GuaranteeFlipkart directs you to its category-wise return-policy table for the exact period
Everything elseReplacement Guarantee period depends on the product category and the sellerNotify the seller of any defect at delivery or within the applicable period; replacement may be of the whole product or a part, subject to the seller having it

There is no single Flipkart return period. The terms say the Replacement Guarantee period "depends on the product category and the seller", and point to a separate category-wise table rather than naming a number. The only period stated in the text we read is the 30 days for clothing and footwear, and the 30 Day Replacement Guarantee on damaged, defective or "not as described" lifestyle items.

Replacement is also conditional on the seller having the item. The terms say replacement "can be for the entire product/s or part/s of the product subject to availability of the same with the seller" — so the guarantee is a right to a replacement the seller can actually supply.

What happens if a product you bought is recalled

Flipkart states it will make reasonable efforts to tell you if it receives a formal product recall notification from a governmental or regulatory authority, and to share the safety concern and recommended remedial steps "to the extent made available" to it. That is conditional on three things it names: a formal recall having been issued, the product having been bought through Flipkart, and your current contact details being on record.

The sentence that follows is the one worth keeping: "As a marketplace, we relay recall information as provided and do not independently verify its accuracy." Flipkart directs you to contact the manufacturer directly, or the seller through the platform if the manufacturer is unavailable.

Everything on this page is Flipkart's own published terms text, read on 30 October 2026, quoted or closely paraphrased. Nothing was bought, exchanged, returned, replaced or claimed; we did not hand over a device, make a warranty claim or test any of these processes. Nothing here is a claim about how Flipkart handles any individual exchange, return or recall, and nothing alleges wrongdoing by Flipkart, by any seller or by any manufacturer. Exchange values, eligibility and pickup arrangements are set by Flipkart and its partners and are not reproduced here. This page is a plain-English summary for shoppers, not legal advice, and it does not state your rights under Indian consumer law — which exist independently of any platform's terms. Policy pages change without notice; the live page governs.
Decide about the exchange before the delivery agent is at your door, not at it. The pickup and the delivery are simultaneous and the terms say the old device never comes back. Wipe the device yourself and verify the wipe — the terms put the risk of leftover data on you, not on Flipkart, the seller or the manufacturer. And keep every box and accessory for anything you might return: returning a product without all its original packaging is a listed exclusion.

Five things to check before a Flipkart exchange or return

One: the exchange is final. "In no scenario can this device be returned back to me" is the published wording, and the handover is hand-in-hand with the new device. Two: you are indemnifying the next owner too, not only Flipkart, against third-party claims including attorney fees.

Three: wipe it and check the wipe. The terms say that if data is still accessible "due any technical reason", Flipkart, the seller and the manufacturer are not responsible. Four: keep the box. Returning anything without all original packaging and accessories is one of eight published exclusions. Five: there is no one return window — it varies by category and by seller, with 30 days stated for clothing and footwear. Policy pages change; read the live terms before you rely on any of this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel a Flipkart exchange after handing over my old phone?
Flipkart's published buyback terms say no. The wording is: "I understand once a device is sent by me to Flipkart, in no scenario can this device be returned back to me." The terms also state that the new device delivery and the old device pickup happen simultaneously, "hand in hand", so the decision is made at the doorstep. This is a summary of published terms, not legal advice, and nothing here describes how any individual exchange was handled.
What happens to the data on a phone I exchange on Flipkart?
Under the published terms, erasing it is your responsibility and so is the risk if the erase fails. The clause reads: "I confirm that all the data in the said device will be erased before handing it over… I also confirm that in spite of erasing the data manually/electronically, if any data still accessible due any technical reason, Flipkart.com, Seller or the manufacturer shall not be responsible for the same and I will not approach Flipkart.com for any retrieval of the data." Wipe the device yourself and verify it before the pickup.
What can't be returned or replaced on Flipkart?
Flipkart's terms list eight exclusions: damage due to misuse; incidental damage from malfunctioning; any consumable that has been used or installed; products with tampered or missing serial or UPC numbers; any damage or defect not covered by the manufacturer's warranty; any product returned without all original packaging and accessories including the box; and made-to-order jewellery. Separately, the terms say returns are not applicable at all for made-to-order jewellery, innerwear, lingerie, socks and clothing freebies. Customers blocked for suspicious or fraudulent activity are also stated as not allowed to return products.
How many days do I get to return something on Flipkart?
There is no single number in the terms. Flipkart states that the Replacement Guarantee period "depends on the product category and the seller" and points to a separate category-wise table. The one period stated in the text we read is 30 days for clothing and footwear with qualified sellers — conditional on the items being unused other than for trial, unaltered, unwashed, unsoiled and undamaged, with original tags and packaging intact. Damaged, defective or "not as described" lifestyle items are covered by a 30 Day Replacement Guarantee. Replacement is also subject to the seller having the item available.
Will Flipkart tell me if a product I bought is recalled?
Its terms say it will make reasonable efforts to, through an appropriate channel, subject to three conditions it names: a formal recall having been issued by a governmental or regulatory authority, the product having been purchased through Flipkart, and your current contact details being on record. The terms then state: "As a marketplace, we relay recall information as provided and do not independently verify its accuracy." Flipkart directs you to contact the manufacturer directly, or the seller through the platform if the manufacturer is unavailable. This page is not legal or safety advice — for a recall affecting you, go to the manufacturer and the relevant authority.

Every clause, exclusion, condition and quotation on this page was read from flipkart.com/pages/terms on 30 October 2026, logged out, from India, and is quoted or closely paraphrased from Flipkart's own published text; the count of return exclusions is our own tally of the list that page publishes. Nothing was purchased, exchanged, handed over, returned, replaced, refunded or claimed: we did not use the buyback programme, did not make a warranty or Replacement Guarantee claim, did not receive a recall notice and did not test any of these processes. Nothing on this page is a claim about how Flipkart, any seller or any manufacturer has handled or would handle any individual exchange, pickup, return, replacement, refund, data-erasure failure or product recall, and nothing alleges wrongdoing by Flipkart, by any seller, by any manufacturer or by any customer. Exchange eligibility, quoted exchange values, pickup scheduling, diagnostic checks and device-condition grading are set by Flipkart and its partners, vary by device, model, condition, pin code and offer, and are not described here. Policy documents change without notice, are sometimes revised without a visible date, and the live page governs rather than this summary — a clause reproduced here may have been amended, replaced or removed since 30 October 2026, and defined terms used by Flipkart may carry meanings its wider terms assign to them. Quotations are reproduced for commentary and reporting; emphasis within them is ours and ellipses mark omitted words; one quoted clause contains the wording "indemnity" where "indemnify" would be expected, reproduced as published. This page is a plain-English summary for shoppers and is not legal advice. It does not state your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the e-commerce rules made under it, or any other Indian law — statutory consumer rights exist independently of any platform's terms and are not waived by them — and for any decision that matters you should read the full terms yourself and take your own advice. For a product recall affecting you, contact the manufacturer and the relevant regulatory authority directly.
