The toys with names you recognise are the ones that barely discount
Read 100 toy listings on amazon.in and the discount badge sorts them into two piles with almost no overlap. The 22 listings from brands a parent could name without looking — Funskool, Skillmatics, Monopoly, Storio, Amazon's own label — run a median of 20% off. The other 78 run a median of 61% off.
The prices, meanwhile, are close: Rs. 560 median for the named brands, Rs. 464 for everything else. So the deeper badge is not buying you a cheaper toy. It is telling you something about how the MRP was set, which is a different fact entirely.
You can see the same split by aisle. Board games — the row where the known brands cluster — discounts at a median of 20%. Soft toys, kids toys and remote control cars, dominated by sellers you have never heard of, sit at 59%, 63% and 61%. One shelf, two pricing conventions.
