We read knife sets, chopping boards and dish racks on two retailers on the same morning, 25 October 2026 — 190 listings from Flipkart's own search results and 79 from Tata CLiQ's own search API.
Both shelves fail a shopper, in opposite directions. Flipkart's discount column has stopped meaning anything — a 74% median badge, a 3.87x median stated MRP, and one list price of Rs. 999 printed across 57 listings — but its reviews are real and plentiful. Tata CLiQ barely inflates a price and barely publishes a rating: a 1.43x median MRP, and a median of two ratings on the third of listings that have any.
📅 Update log:
25 Oct 2026: first published. All prices, stated MRPs, discount badges, star averages and rating counts read from flipkart.com's own search results and tatacliq.com's own search API on 25 October 2026, logged out, from India, nothing purchased. Flipkart rows were deduplicated on brand, price and product type before counting. Every median, count and range is computed over all 190 and all 79 listings respectively. No matched-model price comparison was attempted, because the two catalogues barely overlap on these queries.
We read the same three kitchen queries on two retailers on the morning of 25 October 2026: knife sets, chopping boards and dish racks. Flipkart returned 190 listings from its own search results; Tata CLiQ returned 79 from its own search API.
Both leave you unable to judge what you are buying, by opposite routes. Flipkart's discount badge is enormous and tells you almost nothing — two-thirds of the shelf is badged 70% or more, and a single stated MRP of Rs. 999 covers 57 listings. But 82% of its listings carry a real review history. Tata CLiQ's prices are close to honest — a median stated MRP of 1.43x and not one listing above 5x — but only a third of its listings carry any rating, and the median rating count among those is two.
The two shelves side by side
| Measure | Flipkart | Tata CLiQ |
|---|
| Listings read | 190 | 79 |
| Queries | knife set, chopping board, dish drying rack | knife set, chopping board, dish rack |
| Median discount badge | 74% | 30% |
| Badge range | 4% to 93% | 1% to 70% |
| Listings badged 70% or more | 127 of 190 (66.8%) | 6 of 79 (7.6%) |
| Listings badged 20% or less | 3 of 190 (1.6%) | 26 of 79 (32.9%) |
| Median stated MRP as a multiple of price | 3.87x | 1.43x |
| Highest stated MRP multiple | 13.88x | 3.33x |
| Listings stating an MRP above 5x the price | 59 | 0 |
| Distinct stated MRPs | 46 across 190 | 58 across 79 |
| Most-repeated stated MRP | Rs. 999, on 57 listings | Rs. 2,499, on 6 listings |
| Listings publishing a star rating | 156 (82.1%) | 26 (32.9%) |
| Median rating count, among rated listings | 291 | 2 |
| Median selling price | Rs. 248 | Rs. 664 |
| Price range | Rs. 72 – Rs. 2,149 | Rs. 110 – Rs. 26,200 |
These are not the same goods, and we are not ranking the two on price. Tata CLiQ's median ticket is Rs. 664 against Flipkart's Rs. 248, and its range runs to Rs. 26,200 against Flipkart's Rs. 2,149 — it is carrying premium cookware brands that Flipkart's results for these queries largely do not. This page compares how the two shelves behave — badges, stated MRPs and review coverage — not which is cheaper for the same object. A direct price comparison would need matched models, and on these three queries the two catalogues barely overlap.
Flipkart: one list price, 57 listings
The clearest single fact on the Flipkart side is how few stated MRPs are doing the work. There are 46 distinct stated MRPs across 190 listings, and the distribution is very top-heavy.
| Stated MRP | Listings | Share of the shelf | Appears on |
|---|
| Rs. 999 | 57 | 30.0% | Knife sets, boards and racks alike |
| Rs. 599 | 14 | 7.4% | Mostly knife sets |
| Rs. 499 | 13 | 6.8% | Boards and small racks |
| Rs. 1,499 | 12 | 6.3% | Steel boards and larger racks |
| Those four combined | 96 | 50.5% | Half the shelf, on four round numbers |
Rs. 999 is printed as the list price on 30% of this shelf — on wooden boards, steel boards, three-piece knife sets and plastic dish racks alike, across dozens of unrelated sellers. When the claimed list price is held constant, the badge is no longer describing a discount; it is restating the selling price in percentage form. A Rs. 72 board against Rs. 999 reads 93%. A Rs. 248 board against Rs. 999 reads 75%. Same claim, different price, and the percentage is pure arithmetic.
The multiples that follow are the steepest we have seen on a homeware shelf: a median of 3.87x, with 59 of the 190 listings stating an MRP more than five times their selling price and one reaching 13.88x.
Tata CLiQ: honest prices, almost no evidence
Tata CLiQ's shelf is the mirror image and genuinely creditable on price. Its median stated MRP is 1.43x the selling price, its steepest is 3.33x — below Flipkart's median — and not a single one of its 79 listings claims an MRP above 5x. Twenty-six of them are badged 20% or less. Fifty-eight distinct stated MRPs cover 79 listings, so the strike-throughs are specific to products rather than recycled across them.
What it does not give you is any reason to believe the products are good. Only 26 of 79 listings publish a star rating at all, and among those the median rating count is two. Not two hundred — two people. On Flipkart the equivalent figure is 291, and several listings on this shelf run into five and six figures.
The extremes, on both sides
| Listing | Price | Stated MRP | Multiple | Badge | Rating |
|---|
| Flipkart, wooden chopping board | Rs. 72 | Rs. 999 | 13.88x | 93% | 4.0 / 27,673 |
| Flipkart, 3-piece steel knife set | Rs. 163 | Rs. 1,499 | 9.20x | 89% | 4.2 / 28,121 |
| Flipkart, plastic dish drainer | Rs. 243 | Rs. 1,799 | 7.40x | 86% | 4.2 / 231,598 |
| Tata CLiQ, steel kitchen knife | Rs. 325 | Rs. 329 | 1.01x | 1% | no rating published |
| Tata CLiQ, dearest listing read | Rs. 26,200 | — | — | — | no rating published |
The practical reading: use Flipkart's reviews and ignore its percentages; use Tata CLiQ's prices and do not expect its reviews to help. On a Rs. 200 chopping board the review count is the only signal worth having, and Flipkart has it. On a premium knife set where Tata CLiQ carries the brand at a 1.4x strike-through, the price is likelier to be the real one — but you will be buying on the brand's reputation rather than on anything the listing tells you.
One listing photograph is AI-generated, and says so
While assembling the banner for this page we pulled six Flipkart listing photographs. One of them — a four-piece knife set on a wooden counter — carries the words "AI assisted" printed in its own bottom right corner. It is the seller's or platform's own label, not ours, and it is the image the listing serves to shoppers.
We rejected it for the banner, which is why the knives you see above are a different listing's photograph. We are not alleging anything improper — the image is labelled, which is more than many are, and a generated product photo is not a false claim about the product. It is worth knowing that on this shelf the photograph is not always a photograph, particularly where the stated MRP already carries no information.
How we counted, and what we excluded
Badges, prices and stated MRPs are the figures each retailer's own data serves. Every median, count and range on this page is computed over all 190 Flipkart and all 79 Tata CLiQ listings, not over a selection.
The stated MRP multiple is the stated MRP divided by the selling price. We report it rather than the badge because the badge is derived from it, and because it makes the Rs. 999 problem visible.
Rating coverage counts a listing as rated if the retailer publishes both a star average and a count. Flipkart: 156 of 190. Tata CLiQ: 26 of 79. The median rating count is taken across rated listings only, so Tata CLiQ's figure of two is the median of the 26 that have any rating at all — the other 53 have none.
Flipkart's search returns duplicate listings under different keys; we deduplicated on brand, price and product type before counting, which is why 190 is lower than the raw row count. Tata CLiQ's API did not return duplicates on these queries.
We did not attempt a matched-model price comparison. On these three queries the two catalogues overlap on almost nothing - Tata CLiQ returns premium cookware brands and Flipkart returns unbranded and own-label goods - so any head-to-head price claim would have been built on products that are not the same thing.
The honest summary
Neither shelf gives a shopper both halves of what they need. Flipkart has the reviews and a discount column that has stopped meaning anything: a 74% median badge built on a 3.87x median claim, with one stated MRP of Rs. 999 covering 30% of the shelf. Tata CLiQ has prices you can broadly trust — 1.43x median, nothing above 5x — and a review column that is empty two-thirds of the time and shows a median of two ratings when it is not.
Read the percentage on Flipkart as noise and the rating as signal. Read the price on Tata CLiQ as roughly real and the rating as absent. Nothing either retailer is doing is improper; they have simply made opposite choices about which column to let go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Flipkart or Tata CLiQ cheaper for kitchen tools?
We deliberately have not answered that, because on these queries the two shelves are not selling the same goods. Tata CLiQ's median ticket on knife sets, chopping boards and dish racks is Rs. 664 and its range reaches Rs. 26,200; Flipkart's median is Rs. 248 with a ceiling of Rs. 2,149. Tata CLiQ is carrying premium cookware brands that Flipkart's results for these queries largely do not, so a headline "Flipkart is cheaper" would be comparing an unbranded Rs. 72 board with a branded Rs. 2,499 one. A fair price comparison needs matched models, and on these three queries the two catalogues barely overlap. What we can compare is behaviour, and there the gap is enormous: Flipkart's median discount badge is 74% against Tata CLiQ's 30%, built on median stated MRPs of 3.87x and 1.43x the selling price respectively.
Why do so many Flipkart kitchen listings show Rs. 999 as the MRP?
Because a very small number of round list prices cover most of the shelf. Across the 190 Flipkart listings we read there are only 46 distinct stated MRPs, and Rs. 999 appears on 57 of them — 30% of the entire shelf, across wooden boards, steel boards, three-piece knife sets and plastic dish racks from dozens of unrelated sellers. Add Rs. 599 (14 listings), Rs. 499 (13) and Rs. 1,499 (12) and four numbers cover 96 of 190 listings. The consequence is that the discount badge stops describing a discount and starts simply restating the price. A Rs. 72 board against a stated Rs. 999 displays 93%; a Rs. 248 board against the same Rs. 999 displays 75%. Neither percentage tells you anything the price did not. On this shelf 59 of 190 listings state an MRP more than five times the selling price, topping out at 13.88x. Nothing here is improper — sellers set their own list prices — but the column has no information left in it.
Can you trust Tata CLiQ ratings on kitchen products?
There usually aren't any, and where there are, the base is tiny. Of the 79 Tata CLiQ listings we read, only 26 publish a star rating at all — 33%, against Flipkart's 82%. And among those 26 the median rating count is two. Not two hundred; two individual ratings. Flipkart's median across its 156 rated listings on the same queries is 291, and its most-reviewed listing on this shelf carries 231,598 ratings. So on Tata CLiQ you are generally buying on the brand name rather than on any published evidence that the item works. That is not a criticism of the products and we have bought and tested nothing — a four-star average from two people is not evidence of anything either way, which is precisely the point. Where Tata CLiQ does earn trust is the price column: its median stated MRP is 1.43x the selling price and not one of its 79 listings claims more than 5x.
Does a 90% discount on a Flipkart chopping board mean anything?
On this shelf, essentially no. The deepest badge in our Flipkart read is 93%, on a wooden chopping board selling at Rs. 72 against a stated MRP of Rs. 999 — a 13.88x multiple, the steepest in 190 listings. That same Rs. 999 is the stated MRP on 56 other listings on the same shelf, so the 93% is arithmetic on a number that has been applied to a third of the aisle. Two-thirds of the Flipkart shelf — 127 of 190 listings — is badged 70% or more, so a deep badge does not even distinguish a listing from its neighbours. The figure worth reading on that Rs. 72 board is a different one: 4.0 stars from 27,673 ratings. That is the column Flipkart does well, and it is the one to use. For comparison, on Tata CLiQ only 6 of 79 listings reach a 70% badge at all and 26 are badged 20% or less.
Are product photos on these shelves real photographs?
Not always, and at least one says so on its own face. While assembling the banner for this page we pulled six Flipkart listing photographs and one of them — a four-piece knife set on a wooden counter — carries the words "AI assisted" printed in its own bottom-right corner. That label is the seller's or the platform's, not ours, and it is the image shoppers see on the live listing. We rejected it for our banner. Nothing improper is alleged — a labelled generated image is more transparent than an unlabelled one, and a rendered product photo is not in itself a false claim about the product. It is simply worth knowing when you are judging an unbranded Rs. 163 knife set from a photograph, on a shelf where the stated MRP already carries no information. Several other frames we pulled were size-comparison diagrams with tick and cross marks rather than product photographs, which we also rejected. Where a listing's own image is the main evidence you have, look closely at what kind of image it is.
Prices & codes last verified: October 25, 2026
All prices, stated MRPs, discount badges, star averages and rating counts on this page were read from flipkart.com's own search results and tatacliq.com's own search API on 25 October 2026, logged out, from India. Nothing was purchased, unboxed or used, and no claim is made about steel grade, blade sharpness or edge retention, board material, food safety, hygiene, rust resistance, durability, delivery, returns or after-sales service on either retailer. Product descriptions, materials, dimensions and piece counts are the listings' own printed words, reproduced and not independently verified. The two shelves read are not the same goods and this page does not rank the two retailers on price — Tata CLiQ's results carry premium cookware brands largely absent from Flipkart's results for these queries, the median tickets differ by more than two and a half times, and no matched-model comparison was attempted; what is compared is listing behaviour only. A stated MRP is the figure a listing prints; we report it, divide by it and compare it across the shelf, but nothing here asserts that any such figure is false or improper, and a single round list price recurring across many unrelated sellers is reported as fact and not as allegation. Where we note that a listing photograph carries an "AI assisted" label, that label is the seller's or platform's own and appears on the live listing image; nothing here alleges that the image misrepresents the product or that its use is improper, and we have not assessed any other image for generation. Rating coverage figures describe whether a retailer publishes a star average and count, and nothing here alleges that any review is fake, bought or improperly placed, nor have we read or assessed any individual review. Prices on both sites change without notice — check the live listing before buying. Zoutons may earn a commission on purchases made through links on this page, which never affects what we report.
