A Udemy course card in India shows two numbers: a price and a much larger struck-through figure with a discount badge beside it. We read 128 courses off six of Udemy's own category listings on 18 August 2026 to find out which of those numbers actually moves.
The answer is neither, much. Every one of the 128 courses priced between Rs. 399 and Rs. 519, and 73 of them cost exactly Rs. 399. We read 128 courses off six of Udemy's own category listings on 18 August 2026 - development, business, IT and software, design, marketing and personal development - and recorded the price on the card next to the struck-through original price beside it. Every one of the 128 courses was priced between Rs. 399 and Rs. 519. Not one was above Rs. 519, and not one was below Rs. 399.
73 of the 128 - well over half - were priced at exactly Rs. 399. That is the number to hold on to when you see a Udemy course listed at Rs. 3,199 or Rs. 4,649: that figure is the original price, and on the Indian storefront it is almost never what the checkout asks for.

Why the Same Rs. 399 Course Shows 50% Off on One Card and 89% on Another
The discount badge on a Udemy card is calculated from the course's original price, and instructors set that number themselves. Across our 128 courses the original price ran from Rs. 799 to Rs. 4,649 - a range of more than five times - while the price actually charged barely moved. The badge therefore ranges from 50% to 89%, and it is telling you about the instructor's list price rather than about your saving.

The Dearest Courses We Found: Rs. 489 to Rs. 519
Only a handful of the 128 courses broke Rs. 480, and they cluster in two places: vendor-certification prep (CompTIA, Microsoft Azure, Docker/DevOps) and paid-advertising training. Even at the top of the range these are Rs. 519 courses, so the practical spread across Udemy's Indian catalogue is about Rs. 120.

How we read these prices, and what we cannot tell you
On 18 August 2026 we loaded six of Udemy's own category listing pages (udemy.com/courses/development, /business, /it-and-software, /design, /marketing and /personal-development) and recorded, for each course card, the price shown and the struck-through original price beside it. That gave 128 unique courses after de-duplicating titles that appear in more than one category. Prices are the Indian storefront's, in rupees, as shown to a logged-out visitor.
What we cannot tell you: whether a given price is a permanent listing or part of a sale that ends this week - Udemy does not print an end date on the card; what a logged-in account, a returning visitor or an app user is shown, which can differ; whether a course's original price was ever charged; and what any of these cost outside India. Udemy also runs Personal Plan and Udemy Business subscriptions, which are priced separately from these one-off course purchases and are not part of this read. Prices on this store change often - check the course page before you pay.
How to Actually Pay the Lowest Price on Udemy
- Ignore the badge, read the rupee price. Half the catalogue we read is the same Rs. 399. A course showing 89% off is not cheaper than one showing 50% off if both cards say Rs. 399.
- Check the price logged out as well as logged in. Udemy shows different prices to different sessions; the listing price we recorded is what a logged-out visitor in India sees.
- Do not wait for a bigger sale if the card already says Rs. 399. Rs. 399 was the floor across all six categories and 73 of 128 courses - there is not much room below it.
