The discount badge on an ethnic-wear listing is doing arithmetic on a number you never pay. On AJIO's men's kurta pyjama shelf, that number behaves strangely: it gets bigger as the sets get cheaper.

We read 72 listings on 20 October 2026. One sells at Rs. 660 against a stated Rs. 5,999. Fabindia, the only national name here, prints Rs. 1,499 and costs more than 29 of the sets that out-discount it.

20 October 2026 — First publication. Read the same day: ajio.com's own search response for "kurta pajama" via api_prep.py --store ajio, logged out, from India, with nothing purchased and AJIO not contacted; 72 distinct listings captured. Recorded from this read: selling prices from Rs. 458 to Rs. 4,449 with a median of Rs. 1,318, 54 listings under Rs. 2,000 and 28 under Rs. 1,000; stated MRPs from Rs. 899 to Rs. 13,799 with a median of Rs. 3,998, and 40 distinct stated MRPs across 72 listings; printed badges from 11% to 89%, median 62%; the stated MRP rising as the price falls, with a JOMPERS set at Rs. 660 against a stated Rs. 5,999 (9.1x) and the highest stated MRP on the shelf, Rs. 13,799, on a Rs. 3,174 listing, against Fabindia at Rs. 1,079 from a stated Rs. 1,499 (1.4x, 28%) and NETPLAY's Rs. 899, the lowest stated MRP of all 72; nine listings named "SOJANYA Long Kurta Pyjamas with Nehru Jacket", six sharing a stated Rs. 5,498 at prices from Rs. 2,529 to Rs. 2,914 (badges 47%-54%) and three sharing Rs. 5,998 at Rs. 2,939 to Rs. 3,119 (badges 48%-51%); and no star average or review count on any of the 72, because AJIO's response returns neither on this shelf. We opened the listing photograph for 22 of the 72 and found two boys' sets among them - a Pspeaches set at Rs. 670 and a VASTRAMAY set at Rs. 760 - both removed from every comparison here; the remaining 50 photographs were not opened.

The cheapest sets on the shelf carry the biggest MRPs

We read AJIO's own search response for men's kurta pyjama sets on 20 October 2026 — 72 distinct listings, logged out, from India, nothing purchased. Every price, stated MRP and badge below is the one AJIO returned.

The shelf has an inversion in it. A JOMPERS set sells at Rs. 660 against a stated MRP of Rs. 5,999 — 9.1 times its own price, printed as 89% off. Fabindia, the only nationally known name here, prints Rs. 1,499 and takes 28% off to reach Rs. 1,079.

Fabindia's set is therefore dearer than 29 others on the shelf, while printing the second-lowest stated MRP of all 72. The percentage is measuring the MRP, not the garment.

Read the Multiple column downward and the pattern is hard to miss. The four listings carrying a stated MRP above five times their price all sell under Rs. 1,100. The two listings whose stated MRP is closest to what they actually cost — Fabindia at 1.4x and KISAH at 1.1x — are two of the dearer sets here.

None of this makes a stated MRP false, and we are not suggesting any brand has done anything improper. A maximum retail price is a maximum; brands set it, and a brand without national recognition has no reason to set it near its street price. The useful habit is simply to ignore the percentage and compare the rupee figures.

Every row above is a listing called "SOJANYA Long Kurta Pyjamas with Nehru Jacket". Six share a stated Rs. 5,498 and three share Rs. 5,998. Because the stated MRP is held still while the price moves, the printed badge slides from 54% down to 47% across sets sold under one name.

These are almost certainly separate colourways or fabrics, priced individually — ordinary retail, not a defect. But it does mean the badge is telling you which variant you have landed on rather than which one is the better buy. The cheapest of the nine, at Rs. 2,529, shows the biggest discount; the dearest, at Rs. 3,119, shows one of the smallest. On this group, for once, the badge and the price happen to agree — which is exactly why it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Listings we opened the photograph for222 of those 22 turned out to be boys' sets - removed from this page

Three in four sets sell under Rs. 2,000, and 28 of 72 under Rs. 1,000 — so this is a shelf where the money question is usually answered below two thousand rupees, whatever the stated MRPs suggest.

Not one listing publishes a rating. AJIO's search response returns no star average and no review count on this shelf, which is why you will not find a rating anywhere on this page. There is nothing to rank by except price and the stated MRP — and we have just spent two tables explaining why the second one is weak evidence.

Two of the listings are boys' sets

We opened the listing photograph for 22 of the 72. Two of them — a Pspeaches set at Rs. 670 carrying a stated Rs. 6,094, and a VASTRAMAY set at Rs. 760 — are boys' sets, shown on a child model, returned by a men's query. Both have been removed from every comparison on this page.

That matters for the headline story, because the Pspeaches listing carried a 9.1x stated multiple — the joint-highest on the shelf. Had we counted it as a men's set, the inversion above would have looked slightly more dramatic than it is. It is still there without it: the JOMPERS set at Rs. 660 against Rs. 5,999 is an adult listing.

We did not open the photographs for the other 50 listings, so we cannot tell you the rest of the shelf is clean. If a listing looks unusually cheap for an adult set, the photograph is the quickest check.

What this page does not tell you

This is a price read, not a product review. We did not handle, wear, wash or measure anything, and we make no claim about fabric weight, stitching, sizing or fit. Words like "Cotton", "Viscose", "Embroidered", "Slim Fit" and "Pathani" above are the listings' own printed descriptions, reproduced and not verified.

Nor does it tell you today's price. Every figure here was returned by AJIO on the morning of 20 October 2026. Festive-season pricing on ethnic wear moves quickly, and a shelf this size rarely holds still for a week. Check the live listing before you buy, and compare the rupee figure rather than the badge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the cheapest kurta sets on AJIO show the biggest discounts?
Because the badge measures the stated MRP, not the price. On this shelf the stated MRP rises as the selling price falls. A JOMPERS set at Rs. 660 carries a stated Rs. 5,999 — 9.1 times its own price, printed as 89% off. A second JOMPERS set at Rs. 1,050 carries Rs. 7,499. The single highest stated MRP we found, Rs. 13,799, sits on a Rs. 3,174 listing. Compare that with Fabindia, the only nationally known name on the shelf: it prints Rs. 1,499 and takes 28% off, landing at Rs. 1,079. A bigger percentage is not a bigger saving; it is a bigger gap between two numbers, one of which you never pay. We are not calling any stated MRP false — we are reporting what the shelf printed.
What does a men's kurta pyjama set actually cost on AJIO?
The median of the 72 listings we read was Rs. 1,318, and 54 of them — three in four — sold under Rs. 2,000. Twenty-eight sold under Rs. 1,000. The cheapest was Rs. 458, though that is a NETPLAY kurta on its own rather than a set; the cheapest full set was a JOMPERS long kurta with pyjamas at Rs. 540. The dearest was a KISAH set at Rs. 4,449. So the realistic band for a complete set on this shelf is roughly Rs. 540 to Rs. 2,000, with the Nehru-jacket three-piece sets clustering between Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 3,200. Prices moved on the morning we read them and will have moved again.
Why does the same Sojanya set show nine different prices?
It is nine separate listings of one product name. "SOJANYA Long Kurta Pyjamas with Nehru Jacket" appears six times against a stated MRP of Rs. 5,498, selling at Rs. 2,529, Rs. 2,584, Rs. 2,694, Rs. 2,749, Rs. 2,804 and Rs. 2,914 — and three more times against Rs. 5,998, at Rs. 2,939, Rs. 3,059 and Rs. 3,119. Because the stated MRP is held constant within each group while the price moves, the printed badge slides from 54% down to 47% across listings of the same named set. The listings are almost certainly different colourways or fabrics, which AJIO prices separately — that is ordinary retail. The practical point is narrower: on this shelf, the badge tells you which colourway you are looking at, not which is the better buy. Rank by the Rs. figure.
Do AJIO kurta sets have ratings or reviews?
Not in this response. None of the 72 listings carried a star average or a review count — AJIO's search API simply does not return either field on this shelf, which is why no rating appears anywhere on this page. That is a platform behaviour rather than a signal about the garments: it is the same across AJIO shelves we have read. If you want rated listings for men's ethnic wear, Myntra publishes both a star average and a count on comparable products. On AJIO the only numbers you can rank by are the price and the stated MRP.
Are the listings on this shelf all men's sets?
No, and that is worth knowing before you filter by price. We opened the listing photograph for 22 of the 72 listings, and two of them turned out to be boys' sets shown on a child model — a Pspeaches set at Rs. 670 and a VASTRAMAY set at Rs. 760, both returned by a men's kurta pajama query. Both were removed from the comparisons on this page. We did not open the photographs for the other 50 listings, so we cannot tell you the shelf is otherwise clean. Kidswear is priced lower and discounted differently, so a cheap listing near the bottom of a results page is worth a glance at the photograph before you treat it as a bargain for an adult.

PRICES MOVE. Festive-season ethnic-wear pricing changes quickly and a 72-listing shelf rarely holds still for a week — check the live listing before buying. THIS IS A PRICE READ, NOT A PRODUCT REVIEW. We did not handle, wear, wash or measure any garment, and we make NO claim about fabric, fabric weight, stitching quality, sizing, fit or durability. Words such as "Cotton", "Viscose", "Embroidered", "Slim Fit" and "Pathani" are the listings' own printed descriptions, reproduced here unverified. NO STATED MRP ON THIS PAGE IS CALLED FALSE, AND NO WRONGDOING BY ANY BRAND OR SELLER IS ALLEGED. A maximum retail price is a maximum that brands are entitled to set; reporting that one is high relative to the selling price, or shared across several listings, is an observation about published numbers, not an accusation. Listings sharing a product name are in all likelihood separate colourways or fabrics priced individually, which is ordinary retail. No rating appears anywhere on this page because none of the 72 listings published one. We opened the listing photograph for 22 of the 72 and removed the two boys' sets we found; the other 50 photographs were not checked, so we cannot confirm every remaining listing is a men's set. What AJIO publishes at the time you buy prevails over anything here.
