Flipkart Open Box Delivery 2026: What the OTP Costs You

Consumer electronics of the kind delivered on Open Box orders — two smart security cameras and a Wi-Fi camera with its app — on this page about what sharing the Flipkart OTP costs you

Open Box Delivery sounds like a pure gain: the courier opens the carton at your door, you look inside, and the substituted-brick problem disappears. Flipkart even charges a fee that pays for the inspection.

What the terms make clear, and the app does not, is what you give up in exchange. Once you share the OTP on an Open Box order, the three commonest post-delivery complaints — missing, damaged, wrong — are no longer available to you. Here is what to check before those four digits leave your mouth.

On an Open Box order, the OTP is the return policy

Open Box Delivery is Flipkart's answer to the oldest complaint in Indian e-commerce: the sealed carton that turns out to contain a brick. The delivery agent opens the package in front of you, you check what is inside, and only then do you share the one-time password that closes the delivery.

What most buyers do not realise is the other half of that arrangement. Flipkart's own terms, read on 17 September 2026, state that returns for “missing items, damaged product, or wrong product” “will not be accepted if it is an Open Box Delivery order”. The document is explicit about when that happens: “Please verify the product before sharing OTP for an OBD order.”

In other words the verification is not an extra safeguard sitting on top of your normal rights. It replaces them. On a non-OBD order you have seven days to tell Flipkart the box was short an item; on an OBD order, sharing four digits at your door is the end of that conversation.

Defective is different from damaged, and it survives the OTP

The distinction that saves most buyers is the one between a product that arrived broken and a product that does not work.

A defective product — a laptop that will not boot, a phone with a dead pixel, an appliance that fails in week two — is not covered by the Open Box exclusion at all. The terms set out a separate path for it: the brand provides on-call support, and if that does not resolve the problem “a technician will visit your doorstep” to repair it, replace it, or issue a DOA letter under the brand's own policy.

A damaged product is defined much more narrowly than buyers expect. Flipkart's wording: products “which in itself or its packaging is compromised or altered on a plain human sight, without having to open the packaging of the product”. That is a test about what is visible from the outside — which is precisely what the doorstep inspection is for, and precisely why the OTP closes it off.

One more caveat in the same section: software problems and hardware faults a technician can fix at your door — display, keyboard, trackpad, battery and speaker issues are the examples given — are routed to repair rather than to replacement.

You are paying a fee for the open-box check

Flipkart lists four fees that can be charged on an order, and one of them exists specifically for this.

The Protect Promise Fee is described as covering “secured packaging cost and … Open box delivery verification for your order”. It is also the most buyer-friendly of the four: “fully refundable if your order is cancelled or returned”, with no carve-outs attached, where the Offer Handling Fee is non-refundable and the Platform Fee becomes payable again if you cancel.

So the open-box inspection is a service you have paid for. Waving the agent through because you are busy is choosing not to use something that is already on the bill — and, on those three categories of complaint, choosing not to use it is final.

The feeWhat Flipkart says it coversRefundable?
Protect Promise Fee“secured packaging cost and … Open box delivery verification”“Fully refundable if your order is cancelled or returned”
Offer Handling FeeProcessing bank offers on your order“Non-refundable, except on Minutes and grocery”
Payment Handling FeeProcessing your chosen payment instrumentRefundable on cancellation or return, except corporate credit cards and COD

What to actually do at the door, in order

The terms describe a process without ever setting out a checklist for the person standing in the doorway. This is that checklist, assembled from the clauses themselves.

The sequence matters because each step maps onto a specific line in the document. The packaging check comes first because the definition of damage turns on what is visible before the box is opened. The contents check comes next because missing and wrong items are the other two things the OTP forecloses. And the freebies matter because a successful pick-up later requires a “correct and complete product free of any damages (including Freebies)” — a missing bundled cable can stall a return that is otherwise valid.

If something is wrong, do not share the OTP. The order goes back undelivered, which is the outcome the whole mechanism is designed to produce.

StepWhat to doWhy it is in the terms
Before you touch the phoneLook at the outer packaging“Damaged” is defined by what is visible without opening it
While the agent waitsHave the box opened and check the contents against the orderMissing, wrong and damaged are the three things the OTP closes off

Only then share the OTPThe code is the acceptance“Please verify the product before sharing OTP for an OBD order”

One return request per order, and four other limits worth knowing

Whether or not your order came Open Box, the return mechanics carry a restriction that catches people out when a delivery has several items in it.

You may raise a one-time return request for all the items at once under one order id, within seven days of delivery. The sentence that follows is the one to remember: “Further return requests will not be entertained.” If you return the shirt today and discover tomorrow that the trousers from the same order are wrong, the terms as written do not give you a second attempt.

Two other limits are easy to trip over. Anything requiring installation — a washing machine, an air conditioner, a television mount — is returnable “only when such products are installed by the Flipkart / brand authorized personnel”, so getting your own electrician in can cost you the return. And an item being sent back because it is different from what you ordered must be returned unopened.

The ruleWhat the terms say
How many return requests per orderOne. A single consolidated request for all items under one order id
The window for that request7 days from delivery, “for any issues, except for the issues specifically stated”
What happens to later requests“Further return requests will not be entertained”
Products needing installationReturnable “only when such products are installed by the Flipkart / brand authorized personnel”
Items returned as ‘different from what was ordered’“Please ensure the items are not opened”

None of this makes Open Box Delivery a bad thing. It is a genuinely useful protection against the substituted-carton problem, and for high-value electronics it is the closest thing to buying in a shop. But it is a trade, and Flipkart's terms are clear about both sides of it: a check at the door in exchange for the seven-day window you would otherwise have. The cost of knowing that is two minutes on the doorstep. The cost of not knowing it is the whole order.

This page reports what one commercial document says on one day. It is not legal advice, and consumer law in India gives buyers rights that a platform's terms neither describe nor can remove — for a dispute that matters, the National Consumer Helpline or a consumer lawyer is the right next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Open Box Delivery on Flipkart?
It is a delivery method in which the courier opens the package in front of you so you can check the contents before the delivery is completed, and you confirm by sharing a one-time password. Flipkart charges a Protect Promise Fee which its terms describe as covering “secured packaging cost and … Open box delivery verification for your order”. It is used mainly on higher-value items such as phones and electronics, where a substituted or short-shipped carton is the risk it is designed to remove.
Can I return a damaged product if it came by Open Box Delivery?
Not under Flipkart's terms as written. The document read on 17 September 2026 states that returns for “missing items, damaged product, or wrong product” “will not be accepted if it is an Open Box Delivery order”, and tells buyers: “Please verify the product before sharing OTP for an OBD order.” Sharing the OTP is the point at which those three complaints stop being available. A genuinely defective product is different and remains covered, through brand support and a technician visit.
What should I check before sharing the OTP?
Four things, in this order. First the outer packaging, because Flipkart defines a damaged product as one whose packaging is “compromised or altered on a plain human sight, without having to open the packaging”. Second the contents against what you ordered — model, colour, variant, quantity. Third the accessories and freebies, since a later pick-up requires a “complete product free of any damages (including Freebies)”. Only then share the code. If anything is wrong, do not share it and let the order go back undelivered.
What is the Protect Promise Fee on Flipkart?
One of four fees Flipkart lists on orders. Its stated purpose is to cover “secured packaging cost and … Open box delivery verification”, and it is the only one of the four described as “fully refundable if your order is cancelled or returned” without exceptions. By comparison, the Offer Handling Fee is non-refundable except on Minutes and grocery, the Payment Handling Fee is refundable except on corporate credit cards and COD, and the Platform Fee becomes payable again if you cancel or return.
How many times can I raise a return on one Flipkart order?
Once. The terms allow a one-time return request for all the items at once under one order id, within seven days of delivery, and then state that “further return requests will not be entertained”. On a multi-item order it is therefore worth checking everything before raising the first request. Two related limits: products needing installation are returnable only if installed by Flipkart- or brand-authorised personnel, and an item returned as different from what was ordered must be sent back unopened.

Quotations are reproduced as published and are identified as Flipkart's own wording throughout; the groupings, tables, the doorstep checklist and the ordering of steps are ours, assembled from clauses that appear in different sections of the document, and readers should consult the full document rather than rely on any summary of it, including this one. Nothing on this page is legal advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer. This page reports what one commercial document says; it does not set out Indian consumer law, and consumers in India have statutory rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the rules made under it, including the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which exist independently of a platform's terms of use and which a contract cannot remove. Where a platform's terms and a statutory right appear to conflict, that is a question for a lawyer, a consumer forum or the National Consumer Helpline, and not one this page attempts to resolve. No clause quoted here has been tested by us, litigated by us or put to Flipkart for comment, and we do not assert that any clause is enforceable, unenforceable, unfair or in breach of any law. No wrongdoing by Flipkart, by any seller on its platform, by any brand or by any delivery partner is alleged or implied. Fee amounts are not stated in the document and none is quoted here; whether any particular fee applies to a given order, and at what value, is shown at checkout. Which orders are offered as Open Box Delivery is decided by Flipkart and its sellers and varies by product, seller, pin code and time. Terms of use are revised without notice, category-level and seller-level policies differ from the general terms, and separate policies may apply during sale events, so the live document on flipkart.com is authoritative and this page describes one reading of it on one day.
