Flipkart's Terms of Use publish a three-day clock that runs against the seller — and state it twice, once for refunds and once for replacements. A seller who does nothing for three days loses the request.
The less-read part is the return-condition table: six categories, six different standards, and beauty and personal care must come back "New & Unopened" or there is no refund. Read from flipkart.com/pages/terms on 31 October 2026; nothing was ordered or returned.

Flipkart's Terms of Use publishes a Buyer Protection Program with a three-day clock that runs against the seller — and it says so twice. On a refund request: "In case the Seller doesn't close the ticket in 3 days from the date of intimation to the Seller about the refund request, the refund request shall be settled in favor of the Buyer." On a replacement request, the same three days produces a refund in the buyer's favour.
The part most people will not have read is the return-condition table. Flipkart publishes six category-specific conditions a returned item has to meet, and they are not the same. Beauty, health and personal care must come back "New & Unopened". Everything here is quoted from flipkart.com/pages/terms, read on 31 October 2026. Nothing was ordered, returned or disputed.
The three-day seller clock, in Flipkart's own words
| Situation | Clock | What the terms say happens |
|---|
| Refund request | 3 days from intimation to the Seller | "the refund request shall be settled in favor of the Buyer" |
| Replacement request | 3 days from the request being placed | "refund shall be processed in favour of Buyer and Seller shall be liable to refund amount paid to the Seller" |
| Seller rejects the replacement | No stated clock | Buyer "can choose to raise a dispute" via the Help Centre |
| Seller has no stock at all | No stated clock | Seller may refund and "Buyer shall be obligated to accept the refund in lieu of replacement" |
Seller silence is a buyer win under this policy. Both the refund path and the replacement path state a three-day window, and in both cases a seller who does not act inside it loses. On the replacement path the terms go further and make the seller liable for the money: "Seller shall be liable to refund amount paid to the Seller."
There is no matching clock on a rejection. If the seller actively rejects the replacement request, the terms do not give a deadline — they give the buyer a route: "Buyer can choose to raise a dispute by contacting us" through the Help Centre. The three days only bite against a seller who does nothing.
What a returned item has to look like, by category
| Category | Condition Flipkart publishes |
|---|
| Electronics | "Should be included" |
| Clothing and Footwear | "New & Unworn" (other than for trial) |
| Beauty, Health & Personal Care | "New & Unopened" |
| Sports & Equipment | "New" and returned with original packaging |
| Office Products | "New" and returned with original packaging |
| Jewellery | "New" and returned with original packaging |
"Beauty, Health & Personal Care" must be returned "New & Unopened". Read against the next line in the terms — "If the product being returned is not in accordance with the above parameters, then Buyer shall not be entitled to any refund of money from the Seller" — that is a meaningful limit. Opening a cosmetic or a supplement to check it is, by the published condition, enough to put it outside the stated parameters even while the return window is still open.
Clothing and footwear get an explicit exception that beauty does not. They must be "New & Unworn" — but the terms add "(other than for trial)", so trying a garment on is contemplated by the policy. No equivalent words appear on the beauty row. Sports equipment, office products and jewellery must each be "New" and come back with original packaging; the electronics row says only "Should be included", which in context is about the accessories in the box.
The four ways a seller can close your return
| Option | What the terms say it means |
|---|
| Replace after shipment collection | Seller waits for the logistics team to collect the shipment before replacing it |
| Refund after shipment collection | Seller waits for the logistics team to collect the shipment before refunding |
| Refund without shipment collection | Seller refunds without expecting the original shipment back |
| Replace without shipment collection | Seller replaces without expecting the original shipment back |
Two of the four do not require you to send the item back. "Refund without shipment collection" and "Replace without shipment collection" are both options the seller can pick when closing the ticket — the terms describe them as the seller having agreed to settle "without expecting the original shipment back". Which option is used is the seller's choice, not the buyer's.
Return shipping is on the seller either way. The terms state "Shipping cost for returning the product shall be borne and incurred by the Seller", and on the replacement path, "All shipping and other replacement charges shall be borne and incurred by the Seller." The terms also note that a "Seller can always accept the return irrespective of the policy", and that if the seller disagrees, "Buyer can file a dispute under Buyer Protection Program."
The reasons the policy names for a replacement
| Reason for return, as listed in the terms |
|---|
| Shipping was damaged |
| Item was defective |
| Item Dead on Arrival |
| Item(s) were missing |
| Wrong item sent |
These are the terms' own "leading reasons" for a replacement request, listed in the Replacement section. The definition Flipkart gives is broader than the list: "A Buyer can request for replacement whenever he is not happy with the item, reason being Damaged in shipping, Defective item, Item(s) missing, wrong item shipped and the like."
But ordering the wrong thing yourself is carved out explicitly. The Buyer Protection section opens with: "We encourage the Buyer to review the listing before making the purchase decision. In case Buyer orders a wrong item, Buyer shall not be entitled to any return/refund." "Wrong item sent" in the list above is the seller's error; the wrong item ordered is yours, and the published policy treats them very differently.
What the terms say about bank chargebacks
| Chargeback type | What it means | What the terms say |
|---|
| Item not received CB | Buyer hasn't received the item | "Refund will be created in accordance with the dispute policies" |
| Unauthorized CB | Buyer hasn't made this particular transaction | "Refund will be created in accordance with the dispute policies" |
| Item not as described | Item is not what the Buyer expected | "Dispute will be decided in accordance with the dispute policies" |
Flipkart's terms recognise three chargeback situations when a dispute comes from a payment gateway or bank, and route all three to its dispute policies rather than to an automatic refund. The terms also put invoicing squarely on the seller: "Seller expressly agrees that issuing the correct and complete invoice is the sole and primary responsibility of the Seller", and that invoices must state "Powered by Flipkart" — "failing to do so Seller will be liable for chargebacks".
Every rule, clock and condition on this page is quoted or closely paraphrased from flipkart.com/pages/terms, read once, on 31 October 2026, logged out, from India. Nothing was ordered, returned, replaced, refunded or disputed to test any of it. Flipkart can and does change its terms without notice, and separate policies may apply on sale days — read the live page before relying on anything here.
If your return goes quiet, the clock is working for you. On Flipkart's published terms, a seller who does not close a refund ticket within three days of being notified loses it, and a seller who does not respond to a replacement request within three days owes a refund. Note the day you raised it. And do not open beauty or personal-care items you are unsure about — the published return condition for that category is "New & Unopened", with no trial exception of the kind clothing gets.
Five things worth knowing before you return something
One: note the date you raise the request. Three days of seller silence settles both a refund and a replacement in your favour by the published terms. Two: check your category's condition — beauty is "New & Unopened", clothing is "New & Unworn" but trial is allowed, and sports, office and jewellery need the original packaging.
Three: return shipping is the seller's cost, stated twice in the terms. Four: ordering the wrong item is not covered — that exclusion is in the first paragraph of the Buyer Protection section. Five: sale days may run different rules; the terms say "On certain select days as specified by Flipkart (such as 'The Big Billion Day') separate policies may be applicable." Terms change without notice — read the live page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Flipkart's Buyer Protection Program?
It is the section of flipkart.com/pages/terms that sets out what happens when a return, refund or replacement request is raised against a seller. Read on 31 October 2026, it publishes a three-day clock on the seller, a six-row table of per-category conditions a returned item must meet, four ways a seller may close a return ticket, and a dispute route when a seller refuses. It also states plainly that "In case Buyer orders a wrong item, Buyer shall not be entitled to any return/refund."
What happens if a Flipkart seller ignores my return request?
By Flipkart's published terms, you win. On a refund: "In case the Seller doesn't close the ticket in 3 days from the date of intimation to the Seller about the refund request, the refund request shall be settled in favor of the Buyer." On a replacement: "If the Seller doesn't respond to the Buyer's replacement request, within three (3) days ... refund shall be processed in favour of Buyer and Seller shall be liable to refund amount paid to the Seller." There is no equivalent deadline where the seller actively rejects the request — there the terms point you to the Help Centre dispute route instead.
Can I return opened beauty products on Flipkart?
Flipkart's published return condition for "Beauty, Health & Personal Care" is "New & Unopened", and the terms add that "If the product being returned is not in accordance with the above parameters, then Buyer shall not be entitled to any refund of money from the Seller." Clothing and footwear get an explicit exception for trying the item on — "New & Unworn" (other than for trial) — but no such wording appears on the beauty row. This is the policy as published; individual sellers may accept more, since the terms note a seller "can always accept the return irrespective of the policy".
Who pays return shipping on Flipkart?
The seller. Flipkart's terms state "Shipping cost for returning the product shall be borne and incurred by the Seller", and on the replacement path, "All shipping and other replacement charges shall be borne and incurred by the Seller." Separately, the terms list fees charged on orders — a Platform fee, an Offer Handling Fee, a Payment Handling Fee and a Cash on Delivery Fee — and describe the Offer Handling Fee as non-refundable except in limited cases.
Do Flipkart's return rules change during the Big Billion Days?
They can. Flipkart's terms state: "On certain select days as specified by Flipkart (such as 'The Big Billion Day') separate policies may be applicable." The terms do not say what those separate policies are or how they differ, so the only safe reading is to check the return window and conditions shown on the product page itself during a sale event rather than assuming the ordinary rules carry over. Terms change without notice.

Every rule, clock, category condition and quoted clause on this page was read from flipkart.com/pages/terms on 31 October 2026, logged out, from India. Nothing was ordered, returned, replaced, refunded, cancelled or disputed to test any of it, and no claim is made about how any individual return, seller or Help Centre interaction is handled in practice. Quoted text is reproduced as published; the surrounding explanation is our own reading of it and is not legal advice. This page is a plain-language summary of a long legal document and is not a substitute for it — where anything here differs from the live terms, the live terms govern. Flipkart is free to change, add to or withdraw any of these terms at any time without notice, and the terms themselves state that separate policies may apply on select sale days such as the Big Billion Days, so the rules in force when you read this may not be the rules quoted here. Return windows, category conditions and dispute routes also vary by product, seller and category beyond what the terms page sets out. Nothing on this page alleges wrongdoing by Flipkart, by any seller or by any brand; setting return conditions, category-specific parameters and platform fees are ordinary marketplace practices, reported here as published fact.
