We ran the same five category pulls - washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions and microwave ovens - on Croma, Reliance Digital and Vijay Sales on 17 August 2026, and matched the results on brand, capacity, star rating and load type. Croma returned 209 listings with a price and a higher stated MRP, Vijay Sales 135 and Reliance Digital 60. One machine could be matched by model code, LG's T80VBMB1Z 8 kg top-load: Rs. 23,190 at Croma against Rs. 20,490 at Reliance Digital, a Rs. 2,700 gap. Across eleven spec-matched Croma and Vijay Sales pairs, Vijay Sales was cheaper on ten by Rs. 1,009 to Rs. 6,500. The stated MRPs disagree more than the prices do - the same Samsung 8 kg machine carries a Rs. 31,990 MRP at two sites and Rs. 37,990 at the third. And only Croma publishes customer ratings, on 129 of its 209 listings.

We read 74 Vijay Sales air fryer, microwave, mixer grinder and small kitchen appliance listings on August 12, 2026 from the retailer's own category pages, and seated 19. Priced by the litre, the two big formats on this shelf are two different economies: a litre of microwave cavity costs Rs. 312 to Rs. 482, while a litre of air fryer basket costs Rs. 667 to Rs. 1,833 - between two and four times as much for a machine that holds less food. Inside the air fryer chapter alone the identical 4.2-litre basket sells at Rs. 667 a litre from one brand and Rs. 1,833 from another. The second pattern is the badge: the challenger brands run deep, with KENT at a median 58 per cent across four listings, Morphy Richards at 54 and Wonderchef at 47, while the incumbents hold at 23 per cent for Philips and Panasonic, 28 for IFB and 29 for Ninja, against a shelf median of 35. Not one of the 74 rows carries a customer rating. Nineteen picks, Rs. 299 to Rs. 13,490.

We read 205 Tata CLiQ dinnerware, glassware and kitchen storage listings on August 12, 2026 from the retailer's own catalogue across three queries, and seated 20. Eighty-eight of those listings are multi-piece sets, so the tile price is a box price: divided by the piece count, this shelf runs from Rs. 30 to Rs. 1,187 per piece against a median of Rs. 174 - a 40x range. Two adjacent picks here make the point: six tempered glass plates at Rs. 181 each and one ceramic plate at Rs. 1,118, on the identical 25 per cent badge. The second pattern is who discounts: house and marketplace labels run deep - Goodhomes at a median 52 per cent across 21 listings, HAZEL at 46 across 21, ExclusiveLane at 47 across 9 - while the established glass and ceramic names barely move, with Corelle at 13 per cent, Borosil at 5 and Clay Craft at 5. Eighty-two rows carry a rating at a median sample of one vote, and 28 listings show a 5.0 built on a single rating. Twenty picks, Rs. 284 to Rs. 1,628.

We read 36 Reliance Digital ceiling fan, air cooler and water heater listings on August 12, 2026 from the retailer's own catalogue, and seated 20. This is a shelf of seasonal machines being cleared at the end of their season and the badge shows it: the median discount across all 36 rows is 47.5 per cent, roughly double what the same retailer's kitchen and television shelves carry, with air coolers running to 61 per cent in the last weeks anyone will use one this year. Priced per litre of tank, the coolers run from Rs. 97 to Rs. 314 - a 3.2x range - and every one of the cheapest litres sits in a large desert cooler while the dearest sits in a slim tower. On the fan side the gap that matters is not price but power: a one-star induction fan draws roughly 75 watts against 28 on the single BLDC model here, which at twelve hours a day is about Rs. 1,400 a year and repays the BLDC premium in six months. Not one of the 36 rows carries a customer rating. Twenty picks, Rs. 449 to Rs. 8,288.

We read 115 Croma chimney, hob and induction cooktop listings on August 12, 2026 from the retailer's own catalogue across three queries, and seated 20. Priced by the thing you are actually buying, the chimneys run from Rs. 4.67 to Rs. 14.76 per cubic metre per hour of suction - a 3.2x range for the same extracted air - and the induction plates from 97 paise to Rs. 2.08 a watt. The same 1300 m3/hr Bosch motor costs Rs. 1,900 more in a 90cm body than a 60cm one, which is capture area rather than power. Thirty-four of the 115 rows carry a rating and exactly one has a usable sample: a Rs. 3,999 Philips cooktop at 4.3 from 143 votes, the only pick here with a rating pill, on a shelf that also contains a 5.0 and a 1.0 each built on a single vote. One Elica two-burner manual gas stove is listed at Rs. 3,299 against a stated MRP of Rs. 29,990, an 89 per cent badge and the only figure above 66 per cent in the read. Twenty picks, Rs. 1,749 to Rs. 47,399.

We read 84 Croma water purifier and geyser listings on August 12, 2026 from the retailer's own catalogue across two queries, and seated 20. Priced per litre of stored water, the 42 geysers run from Rs. 206 to Rs. 1,575 a litre against a median of Rs. 625 - a 7.6x range for the same commodity - and every one of the ten cheapest litres sits in a 25-litre tank. The cheapest listing on the shelf, a Rs. 2,999 three-litre instant heater, is among the dearest water on it at Rs. 1,000 a litre, while the dearest geyser at Rs. 15,100 holds twenty-five litres at Rs. 604. Within one brand's range, the fifth BEE star costs Rs. 1,700 at identical capacity. The 16 non-RO purifiers carry a median price of Rs. 10,545 against Rs. 18,925 for the 26 RO ones, so the UV-versus-RO decision is worth about Rs. 8,000. Only 34 of the 84 rows carry a rating and the largest sample is 17 votes, so no pick here gets a rating pill. Twenty picks, Rs. 2,999 to Rs. 18,360.

We read 102 Amazon India smart home listings on August 12, 2026 across four searches - security camera, smart plug, smart door lock and smart LED bulb - and seated 23. The discount badge in this aisle shrinks as the object gets serious: a median 72 per cent off across 27 smart LED bulbs, 68 per cent across 30 smart plugs, 50 per cent across 15 security cameras and 48 per cent across 30 smart door locks. Nine of the 102 listings state an MRP exactly one hundred times their selling price - Rs. 799 against Rs. 79,900, Rs. 1,504 against Rs. 1,50,400 - which is a decimal error rather than a discount, and none of them is seated here. The camera shelf is the worst-rated in the aisle at a median 3.7 against 4.2 for plugs and 4.3 for locks. A hundred of the 102 rows carry a rating, with samples running from four votes to 52,307. Twenty-three picks, Rs. 79 to Rs. 13,499.

We read 61 Amazon ceiling fan, pedestal fan, table fan and air cooler listings on August 10, 2026 from the retailer's own search results and seated 22. This is one of the few shelves where a very large crowd has voted, and the verdict is that the cheap machines work. Six listings carry more than 5,000 ratings each - an Amazon Basics pedestal fan with 41,637, an Orient 1200mm ceiling fan with 34,942, a Havells ceiling fan with 21,921 and a Bajaj cooler with 18,145 among them - and they score between 3.5 and 4.1 at prices from Rs. 1,199 to Rs. 5,500. The most expensive ceiling fan in the read costs Rs. 9,099 and carries 135 ratings at 3.7. The two lowest-rated listings on the page, both at 1.5, are a Rs. 10,499 bladeless tower fan and a Rs. 599 device sold as a mini AC. Three coolers priced within sixteen rupees of each other are badged 27, 44 and 50 per cent. Twenty-two picks, Rs. 549 to Rs. 11,491.

We read 63 Croma kitchen listings on August 10, 2026 from the retailer's own product API - 21 mixer grinders, 21 induction cooktops and 21 air fryers - and seated 21. Two findings run through the page. First, the same product is listed twice: the Croma Infrared 2200W cooktop with three presets appears at Rs. 3,469 badged 31 per cent and again at Rs. 3,799 badged 24 per cent, both against an identical stated MRP of Rs. 5,000, so a shopper comparing percentages rather than prices pays Rs. 330 extra for the same hob. Second, wattage can be priced: Croma's own mixer ladder holds a flat Rs. 2.80 per watt, while a Philips 1000-watt four-jar machine at Rs. 14,995 works out at Rs. 14.99 against Croma's 1000-watt four-jar at Rs. 3,999. Ratings barely exist - nine listings carry twenty or more, twenty-nine carry one to five, nineteen carry none - and the deepest badge in the read, 63 per cent on a Havells air fryer, rests on a single rating of 1.0. Twenty-one picks, Rs. 1,399 to Rs. 54,690.

We read 38 Reliance Digital air conditioner, dishwasher, chimney and oven listings on August 11, 2026 from the retailer's own listing data, and seated 22. Every one of these categories publishes a hard capacity number - tons, place settings, centimetres, litres - and in every one of them the capacity turns out to be the cheap part. A 1 Ton 5 star air conditioner costs Rs. 38,490 while a 1.5 Ton 3 star costs Rs. 28,990: fifty per cent more cooling for Rs. 9,500 less, because you are paying for the star rating rather than the tonnage. Three dishwashers of identical 14 place-setting capacity span Rs. 26,290 to Rs. 58,087, a factor of 2.2. Three chimneys from one brand step cleanly from 60 to 90 cm at about Rs. 140 per centimetre, and a rival 90 cm costs Rs. 13,290 more than that brand's own. A 20 litre solo microwave is Rs. 4,988 and a 28 litre convection is Rs. 24,490. Not one of the 38 listings carries a rating. Twenty-two picks, Rs. 4,988 to Rs. 58,087.

We read 81 Vijay Sales listings on August 9, 2026 from the retailer's own category pages and seated 22 refrigerators and washing machines. The discount column sorts almost perfectly by brand. Voltas Beko's four listings show 31, 47, 51 and 53 per cent - three of the four deepest badges on the page - while its prices sit in the middle of the shelf, from Rs. 10,990 to Rs. 13,990. At the other end, LG posts the read's smallest badge at 16 per cent and Whirlpool the second smallest at 17. That is brand pricing policy, not value: Voltas Beko is a comparatively recent entrant to Indian white goods and is buying share. Where two comparable machines meet, only the claim moves. Two 7 kg semi-automatics sell Rs. 90 apart and show 21 and 31 per cent. Two 8.5 kg semi-automatics from LG and Godrej sell at exactly Rs. 16,490 and show 33 and 21. An IFB and an LG both sell at exactly Rs. 19,990 and show 21 and 31. Twenty-two picks, Rs. 9,200 to Rs. 20,490.

We read 24 Reliance Digital listings on August 9, 2026 from Reliance Digital's own catalogue across two queries - air conditioner and microwave oven - and seated 18. One pair of listings explains the page. Morphy Richards has a 20-litre solo microwave here in white at Rs. 4,988 against a stated Rs. 13,595, and a 20-litre solo in black at Rs. 6,490 against a stated Rs. 12,599. Nothing either listing states separates them but the finish, and the badges read 63 and 48 per cent. The same arithmetic runs through the air conditioning aisle: three 1 ton 3 star inverter splits sell within Rs. 1,100 of each other - Rs. 23,890, Rs. 24,590 and Rs. 24,990 - against claims of Rs. 42,000, Rs. 37,790 and Rs. 48,991. What the specifications say is more useful. A grill element costs Rs. 200 over the largest solo oven here, convection costs Rs. 4,900 over the grill, and one brand's 80-litre built-in costs Rs. 1,041 more than its own 22-litre. Eighteen picks, Rs. 4,988 to Rs. 28,990.

We read 84 Croma listings on August 9, 2026 from Croma's own catalogue across two queries - refrigerator and washing machine - and seated 19. The first thing to say about this shelf is that there is almost nothing on it in the way of customer evidence. The largest rating sample among the nineteen is 21 votes. Seven listings carry no rating at all. Four carry a perfect 5.0, and each of those four rests on exactly one rating, as does the single 1.0 on a Whirlpool. Nothing here clears our hundred-rating threshold, so no rating pill appears on this page at all. What is left is specification, and this shelf prices it unusually legibly: one BEE energy star on a 190-litre Haier costs Rs. 1,000, an inverter motor on a 7 kg LG costs Rs. 200 over the IFB beside it, a kilo of drum capacity costs Rs. 2,000, and front loading costs about Rs. 2,500 over top loading. The badges tell you less: Bosch and Electrolux both state Rs. 65,990 and sell Rs. 8,000 apart. Nineteen picks, Rs. 8,090 to Rs. 53,990.

We read 47 Amazon India kitchen listings on August 9, 2026 from Amazon's own search results across three queries - mixer grinder, air fryer and electric kettle - and seated 19 of them. One number reorganised the whole page: the cheapest listing in the read, a Rs. 474 Pigeon Amaze Plus kettle, carries 178,425 ratings, while the other eighteen picks carry 133,070 between them. The evidence on this shelf is not spread out, it is piled on the least expensive thing. The badges point somewhere else entirely. An Amazon Basics kettle claims Rs. 2,699 for the same 1.5 litres that Pigeon claims Rs. 1,245 for, and takes a 70 per cent badge for it while rating 3.7 against 4.0. A Havells air fryer states Rs. 17,895 and sells at Rs. 6,649, the largest claim on the page by nearly eight thousand rupees. Philips states Rs. 5,995, sells at Rs. 4,634 and shows 23 per cent - the smallest badge in the read. Nineteen picks, from Rs. 474 to Rs. 6,649.

We read 44 Reliance Digital television listings on August 9, 2026 from the retailer's own product pages and grouped them by screen size before touching the discount column. Twelve of them are 55-inch sets, and they run from Rs. 27,990 to Rs. 1,72,990 - a 6.2x range at one diagonal - with badges that fall almost monotonically as the price rises, from 65 per cent at the bottom to 17 at the top. Three Samsung 55-inch OLED listings differ mainly in finish and sit Rs. 60,000 apart. Two LG 55-inch sets on the same shelf are Rs. 97,500 apart. Lower down, two 43-inch televisions sell at exactly Rs. 16,490 while showing 60 per cent and 38, because one seller claimed Rs. 41,499 and the other Rs. 26,730. Six 32-inch sets sit within Rs. 1,990 of each other, and a Sony of the same size costs Rs. 29,990 - more than a 55-inch 4K panel at the top of this page. Not one of the 44 listings publishes a customer rating. Twenty-two picks, from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 5,19,990.
