We read Myntra's skincare aisle on 29 September 2026 - 120 distinct listings - and priced the 61 that state a volume by the millilitre. Six brands sell what their own titles call the same product in two bottle sizes, each pair sharing one rating count because Myntra pools the reviews - and in five of the six the small bottle costs 22% to 72% more per millilitre. The 15 listings of 15 ml or less run at a median Rs. 2,360 per 100 ml against Rs. 296 for the 20 listings of 100 ml or more, yet their tickets look alike: Rs. 219 to Rs. 279 against Rs. 214 to Rs. 323. The full rate runs Rs. 55 to Rs. 13,193 per 100 ml. This aisle also barely discounts - a median badge of 15.5%, with 80 of 120 at 20% or less.
We read Flipkart's trimmer shelf on 29 September 2026 - 213 distinct listings from Rs. 249 to Rs. 15,805, with 26 seated here. Sixteen of them carry the model number 538 in the title under twelve different brand names, sell for Rs. 423 to Rs. 595, and are badged anywhere from 51% to 88% - because they state six different MRPs between Rs. 999 and Rs. 3,999. Two charge the identical Rs. 448 and show 72% and 55%. Rating counts are pooled too: NOVA displays 483,247 ratings on three trimmers and 203,799 on three more, and a pair of NHT 1083 clippers six rupees apart shows 38% and 45%. The brands with shops barely discount - a median badge of 38% against 69.5% for everything else - and the most-rated listing of all 213, with 488,640 ratings, carries a 22% flash.
We read Myntra's hair care shelf on 28 September 2026 - 50 distinct listings from Rs. 93 to Rs. 2,970, with 25 seated here. The median discount badge is 27%. On five other Myntra shelves pulled in the same run that same morning it was 75% for bedsheets, 75% for men's watches, 64.5% for sandals, 57% for handbags and 45% for mixer grinders. Twelve of the 50 hair care listings are under 15% off and the shallowest is 2%. The feedback runs the other way: 42 of the 50 publish a rating, at a median of 4,550 each, topping out at 88,256. Three brands show one rating count across two or three tiles - one sells the same shampoo at Rs. 786, Rs. 787 and Rs. 794.
We pulled Amazon's results for "almonds 1kg", "cashew 1kg" and "ghee 1 litre" on 25 September 2026 and divided every price by the weight the listing states — 120 listings read, 106 with a readable figure. A kilo of almonds costs Rs. 899 to Rs. 1,598 (median Rs. 1,128), a kilo of cashews Rs. 749 to Rs. 1,898, a litre of ghee Rs. 299 to Rs. 2,890. The cheap kilo and the low star rating arrive together: almonds under Rs. 1,000/kg average 3.44 stars on a median 18 reviews, those above it 4.02 on a median 2,530. Thirteen listings charge exactly Rs. 999 for a kilo of almonds, rated 2.1 to 5.0, and five Avogro cashew packs share one price of Rs. 879 with ratings of 1.2, 1.9, 2.2, 3.0 and 5.0.
We pulled Flipkart's sanitary pad, panty liner and menstrual cup results on 25 September 2026 and divided every price by the piece count the listing states — 177 listings read, 99 with a count we could read without guessing. One sanitary pad costs between Rs. 3.12 and Rs. 19.90, with a median of Rs. 5.20. The discount badge splits by brand recognition: the 27 familiar-name listings carry a median 40% badge and cost Rs. 6.39 a pad, the 23 lesser-known labels a 65% badge and Rs. 3.95. Twenty-nine listings are Cailin Care 155mm liners under 29 different product names, 27 of them with no rating at all — and on the cup shelf Pee Safe pools one rating count across three sizes while SIRONA publishes three separate ones.
We read Myntra's shampoo, hair colour, body lotion and face moisturiser listings on 24 September 2026 - 127 distinct listings with a price and a stated MRP, 22 seated here. Myntra prints the pack size in the listing title, so the arithmetic can actually be done: six products appear in two sizes each, and in all six the larger pack is cheaper per 100 ml or per gram, by between nine and 22 per cent. The discount badge does not track that. The same L'Oreal shampoo is badged 55% at Rs. 726 for 1 L and 20% at Rs. 415 for 340 ml - and the two share one pool of 87,175 ratings, so they are the same product. The cheapest rate here is Rs. 35.70 per 100 ml; the dearest shampoo rate is Rs. 155.50.
We read AJIO's shampoo, conditioner, face wash and body wash listings on 24 September 2026 - 284 distinct listings with a price and a stated MRP, 21 seated here. AJIO's beauty titles carry no pack size, so the identical product string 'DOVE Hair Fall Rescue Shampoo' is listed at Rs. 754, Rs. 326 and Rs. 57 - a spread of 13.2 times - and 23 product names in the full read appear two or three times at different prices. Not one of the 284 listings publishes a rating or a rating count, so there is no sample size to tell them apart either. And the badge tracks the pack rather than the deal: within each family the dearest listing wears the biggest percentage, because each listing declares its own MRP.
We read Nykaa's hair colour, shampoo, conditioner, serum, mask and oil listings on 24 September 2026 - 92 distinct listings with a price and a stated MRP, 22 seated here. All 92 publish a rating average and a count, which is not true of the marketplace beauty shelves we read the same week. That makes the count the number that matters: they run from 4 ratings to 544,080, median 8,448, and a 4.8 built on four people looks identical on a search page to a 4.4 built on half a million. The MRP multiples are tame - 1.01x to 2.08x, median badge 15.5% - and size variants share one rating pool, so two Love Beauty & Planet masks Rs. 205 apart both carry 42,085 ratings. The cheapest listing here is Rs. 90.
We read Amazon's hair oil shelf on 24 September 2026 and divided every price by the millilitres the listing states — 37 listings qualify. The rates run from Rs. 25.80 to Rs. 396.00 per 100 ml, a fifteen-fold spread, against a median of Rs. 95.80. Pack size explains most of it, but not in the direction you would expect: Parachute's 330 ml bottle is Rs. 51.52 per 100 ml while its own 600 ml packs are Rs. 53.33 and Rs. 59.83. And the small-bottle penalty is steep — Mamaearth's Onion Hair Oil is Rs. 198.67 per 100 ml at 150 ml and Rs. 326.00 at 50 ml. This page prints no discount badges, because the MRP figures this shelf returns are per-unit rates rather than MRPs; we explain that in full below.
We read Flipkart's hand wash shelf on 23 September 2026 and priced every listing that states its own volume at what 100 ml actually costs. Neha Herbals sells its Green Handwash refill pouch at Rs. 69 for 750 ml - Rs. 9.20 per 100 ml - and at Rs. 139 for 180 ml, which is Rs. 77.22 per 100 ml. Same brand, same product, 8.39 times the rate, and both listings show the same 30% badge. Across the page the range runs from Rs. 4.84 per 100 ml on a five-litre can to Rs. 386.67 on a 60 ml bottle. Godrej's refill packs work out at Rs. 10.02 per 100 ml on a badge of one per cent.
We read both hair-tool shelves on 19 September 2026 — 49 listings at Croma, 47 at Tata CLiQ — and found exactly one product stocked by both: the Vega Adore straightener, Rs. 1,049 at Tata CLiQ against Rs. 1,099 at Croma, where the cheaper listing also carries the bigger badge (25% against 15%) because each chain states a different MRP, and three and a half times the ratings (70 against 20). On Tata CLiQ the discount is a brand-level constant: all seven Ikonic Professional listings are badged exactly 21%, all five Ikonic Me exactly 30%, ten Vega listings exactly 25%. Croma's badges run 8% to 65%, with the deepest claims on its own house label — including Rs. 20,000 stated on a Rs. 6,999 dryer. Only six of 49 and five of 47 listings carry twenty or more ratings.
We read Croma's hair dryer, hair straightener and grooming kit listings on 19 September 2026. Forty-nine returned both a selling price and a stated MRP; 22 are seated here, from Rs. 699 to Rs. 29,900. The finding that organises the page is Croma's own shelf: two 1600 W BLDC dryers from the house brand sell at Rs. 6,999 and Rs. 4,999 against stated MRPs of Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000, while the most powerful dryer in the read - 2,200 W - costs Rs. 2,299 and claims 8 per cent off. Neither BLDC listing publishes a single rating. Evidence is scarce across the whole shelf: only four of the 49 listings carry more than twenty ratings, and the best-proven products are a Philips dryer at Rs. 1,349 with 97, an AGARO at Rs. 1,029 with 67 and a Havells straightener at Rs. 1,549 with 36 - which costs exactly what a two-rating Croma iron costs.
We read 110 unique non-sponsored face wash listings on amazon.in on 13 September 2026 and seated nineteen. A cleanser is bought on its sticker — Rs. 149, Rs. 299, Rs. 999 — and the sticker is set as much by how much is in the bottle as by what the formula costs. Priced per 100 ml the shelf runs Rs. 74.50 to Rs. 796.00, a 10.7x spread around a median of Rs. 255.50. The finding worth acting on is inside single products: CeraVe's Hydrating Cleanser is Rs. 367 per 100 ml in its 88 ml tube and Rs. 211.20 in its 473 ml pump, which makes the big derma-brand bottle cheaper per millilitre than half the Indian-brand cleansers here. Cetaphil's ladder runs the other way at the bottom, and all three of its sizes share one pooled rating count.
We read 205 unique non-sponsored razor and blade listings on amazon.in on 13 September 2026 and seated twenty-one. A shaving aisle is priced in boxes, and the box price is set by how many blades are inside — so the number that decides what shaving costs you is the one no pack prints large: the cost of one blade. Across the 73 listings we could divide honestly it runs from Rs. 1.86 to Rs. 499.00. And the spread is not brand, it is system: double-edge blades come in at a median of Rs. 3.38, disposable razors at Rs. 16.90 and cartridge refills at Rs. 137.38. Gillette sells at both ends of that. Every pack ladder on the shelf is seated with both of its rungs, because they range from 55 percent cheaper to two.
We read seventy deodorant and perfume listings from Myntra's own listing pages on 9 September 2026 and seated twenty-four, all under Rs. 500, from Rs. 80 to Rs. 449. The shelf runs two pricing regimes at once: the Indian mass brands — HE, Denver, Wild Stone, Park Avenue, Fogg — discount 45% to 74% and land under Rs. 200, while the Marks & Spencer fragrances in the same read discount 0% to 25% and never go below Rs. 599. Ratings are useless for choosing here: the five biggest crowds run from 42,399 to 69,956 ratings and every one of them scores between 4.2 and 4.5. What separates these cans is millilitres per rupee, and the cheapest two work out at Rs. 0.66/ml.
